Our Doctors

Gregory E. Lutz, MD

Dr. Gregory E. Lutz is the Founder and Medical Director of the Regenerative SportsCare Institute (RSI) and Physiatrist-In-Chief Emeritus at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). In addition, he is a Professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He appears annually on New York Magazine’s and Castle Connolly’s ‘Top Doctors’ Lists.

Dr. Lutz is one of the world’s leading experts in the fields of interventional orthopedics and regenerative medicine. Recognized as a pioneer in the non-surgical treatment of low back pain, Dr. Lutz has popularized a number of innovative approaches to the treatment of degenerative disc disease, such as intradiscal platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and various other intradiscal biologic injections. In his clinical practice, Dr. Lutz aims to address the root cause of a patient’s pain in the least invasive way, frequently using ultrasound or fluoroscopically-guided injections of patients’ own (autologous) cells to treat unhealed injuries of the spine, joint, and tendon.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lutz has mentored more than 60 fellows in practice throughout the USA and has written dozens of peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters, for which he has received numerous prestigious awards and research grants. Dr. Lutz’s research is currently focused on determining the clinical efficacy of advanced biologic treatments for degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis of the hip and knee joints. He is regularly invited to lecture around the world to educate other physicians about novel techniques and research in the field of regenerative orthopedic medicine.

A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, Dr. Lutz pursued his specialty training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, before completing an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery, where he has been in practice ever since.

Dr. Lutz founded the Regenerative SportsCare Institute (RSI) in 2016, with the intention of creating a model of orthopedic care that places patients’ interests above all others.
